Student Learning

New Zealand Curriculum

At Lytton Street School, we provide a range of innovative programmes in addition to teaching the core skills of Literacy and Numeracy. Our programmes are designed to promote collaborative, creative and independent learners to meet the needs of both long-term and short-term individual students.

Walker Learning

Lytton Street School is guided by Walker Learning practices which embrace developmental and culturally appropriate strategies, using the students’ own interests and experiences, to ensure that learning is both meaningful and relevant.

Walker Learning results in:

  • Higher levels of engagement and motivation.
  • Higher oral language skills.
  • Increased writing skills.
  • Increased social skills.
  • Greater level of personalised learning opportunities.
  • Improved problem solving and creative thinking.
  • Increased independence and interdependence.

ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages

Lytton Street School celebrates cultural diversity and proudly supports students from a variety of different language backgrounds. All international students receive ESOL support based on an initial assessment of their English language proficiency. As part of the application process the student and their parent/s will be met, online or face-to-face, to assess the level of the student’s English.

English language support is delivered either within the classroom or in a dedicated ESOL space, depending on each student’s needs. The ESOL programme is designed to complement classroom learning, with students practising and reinforcing skills taught in both settings.

Students receive one hour of ESOL per day.

Extra-curricular activities

Lytton Street School recognises the health, wellbeing and cultural benefits that extra-curricular activities provide. Students are encouraged to take part in sport, outdoor education, music, dance, arts and crafts etc to develop key competencies, interpersonal skills, friendships and interests.

Short-Term Programme:

Short-term study generally refers to enrolments of 2 -4 weeks group tours, one term up to one academic year and is designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience New Zealand education, improve their English language skills, and participate fully in school and cultural activities.

Long-Term Programme:

Long-term study refers to enrolments extending beyond one academic year and provides learners with a sustained educational pathway that supports academic progress, language development, social integration and preparation for future educational opportunities in New Zealand.

Regardless of the length of enrolment, international learners are fully integrated into the life of the school and participate alongside domestic students in all appropriate learning programmes, extracurricular activities and school events.

Lytton Street School delivers a curriculum that is fully aligned with The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC). Teaching and learning programmes are designed to develop learners' knowledge, skills, competencies and values while supporting each student's individual strengths, interests and learning needs. International learners receive appropriate academic, language and pastoral support to enable them to participate successfully in the New Zealand education system and achieve positive learning outcomes.

Monitoring student progress

Student progress in Reading, Writing and Mathematics is monitored throughout the students time at Lytton Street School. If our monitoring programme identifies any areas of concern then students will be supported through one of our special learning programmes.
